SOKO LA SAMAKI

KIRUMBA FISH MARKET
The Kirumba Fish Market was designed to change Kirumba’s historical local market which was operating at the time under very poor conditions and with high economic losses. It was designed to become a proper market with appropriate facilities to develop the fisheries sector mainly Dagaa (Rastrineobola argentea) trade. Also the presence of this market has enhanced Dagaa distribution, reduced post harvest losses and improved the processing of Nileperch by swalting, drying as well as trimmings from fish factories. The market employs more than 3000 people who are engaged in different daily activities.

FISHING &EXPORT OF DAGAA (RASTRINEOBOLA ARGENTEA)
Dagaa is the second economic species from Lake Victoria after Nile Perch and the largest in terms of local and regional trade in Eastern and Southern Africa. The current traditional methods of processing Dagaa, contribute to market distribution limitations to the municipal. However there are still great quantities of Dagaa in the Lake. Expert fishing and processing of Dagaa in a hygienic way before vacuum packing in containers could facilitate exports especially to Indonesia and Malaysia.
